LIMASSOL

Limassol , the successor to two ancient city kingdoms , is is often referred to us the venue of a royal wedding in the Middle Ages.Th an 14th century fort , which is built on the site of earlier Byzantine castle , is where according to tradition richard the lion heart married Berengaria of Naverre and crowned her queen of England in 1191. The Archangelos at Monagri was built in 1740 , on the foundations of an older monastery that had burned down . of a special interest is the painted wood – carvediconostasis and the near by olive oil mill from the Roman period . The northern buildings of the monastery have been renovated and now accommodate a centre of contemporary art.

Panagia tis Amasgou Church

Kourris valley about 20 minutes from lemasos The vaulted church of the Monastery of Panagia tis Amasgou dates back to the 12th , 14th and the 16th century wall paintings , the monastery is now run as a convent .

Timios Stavros Church –Kouka

Kourris valley , about 20 minutes from lemessos timios stavros at kouka houses an excellent example of the palaeologian style on a wall painting of the 14th century .

 

Theatres

The annual Shakespeare festival is held every summer at the open air kourion amphitheatre between limassol and pafos . the magical setting overlooking the Mediterranean on a starry summer nite enhances the atmosphere created by shakespeare's drama . The shakespeare Festival is a charity event organized by the society for chest Diseases. This year's performances are scheduled for june 24, 25 and 26 and guests will enjoy ‘The Tempest'.

 

Amuthus Archaelogical site

 

11km east of limssol one of the ancient city kingdoms of Cyprus where according to mythology ,Theseus left the pregnant Ariadne to be cared for after his battle with the Minotaurus . A very important cult of Aphrodite- Asttarte flourished here . Exavations have revealed parts of the Acropolis and Agora areas as well as part of the upper and lower city . The remains include five early christian basilicas dating from the Archaic Roman and Christian periods.
